Washing machines have been around for many decades already, and in fact, they must be one of the most beneficial of all home appliances. This is exactly why one sees so many outstanding makes on the market, but of course some brands have become more popular than others. One of the most popular makes is the Maytag Washing Machine. Year after year, and decade after decade, Maytag has consistently manufactured washing machines which have become extremely popular with consumers. Much of the company’s success is a result of a highly effective advertising campaign which the company ran in the 1970′s.
During the 1970s and into the 1980s, Maytag produced a series of brilliant commercials that featured a bored repairman who would frequently lament that his job was dull and lonely because Maytag Washers never break down. Such a simple and humorous advertising campaign proved to be a wildly effective one. It quickly established the notion that Maytag produced the best and most durable appliances on the market. This enhanced the sales success of Maytag appliances tremendously. So successful was that classic campaign, it perennially boosted the success potential of Maytag appliances -all types of Maytag appliances – for decades to come.
Why was such a campaign so successful? You could say there was a significant element of truth to it. Maytag Washing Machines are known for being durable. Had this not truly been the case then the classic commercials would never have been able to shape a generation of people into truly believing what the advertising campaign has put forth.
The bottom line here is that durability is something the consumer marketplace takes seriously. Ironically, it was a somewhat less than serious and definitely humorous approach to informing the public. But, no matter how great an advertising campaign is, it cannot successfully promote a product that flat out does not deliver on expectations. Well, it can for the short term but only for the short term. The classic Maytag Repairman commercials did not deliver a short term success. These commercials definitely delivered a lot more than short term success. The success lasted decades! Have there been other advertising campaigns that delivered such a stunning amount of success? It would be quite difficult to find one.
Of course, personal need plays a large role when it comes to buying such appliances. People buy washing machines because they aren’t thrilled with the idea of doing a load of laundry by hand. After all, washing everything by hand is far from being an easy or pleasant chore. As a result, washing machines will always be in demand. However, there is not a need for poor quality machines that tend to break down every other day. Maytag Washers are undeniably built to be durable, and this is what was established in the famous commercials of 1970′s. Yes, there have been a few modern variations of the classic Maytag repairman commercials, but they certainly didn’t have the same sort of impact as the original ones.
