Why You Need To Buy a Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker by Paul Jorgensen
Since I am a unrepented coffee addict, coffee is always a big part of my day and I always need fresh cup within reach. I usually drink 10-12 cups of coffee per day. I have 3 or 4 in the morning, a few in the afternoon to keep my caffeine buzz going, then I taper off with a couple cups in the evening. Am I a reckless addict? Aboslutely! But hey, sleep is overrated anyway.
But when you are as big of a java junkie as me and you ALWAYS need
coffee, you end up making a big pot and letting it sit for hours as you drink it one cup at a time. When the coffee is sitting like this it can start tasting pretty burnt and unfresh. That is caused by the coffee maker’s heated burner, and by air seeping into the coffee. It’s completely safe to drink coffee that’s a few hours old and tasting unfresh, but the taste isn’t so pleasant. Because of this I have started buying only thermal carafe coffee makers, and will continue to do so.
A thermal carafe is a stainless steel coffee pot that acts like a thermos, holding heat inside the pot and keeping your coffee hot without using a heated burner. Since you don’t use a burner, there is no burned flavour to the coffee, and it stays fresh throughout much of the day. The thermal carafe also keeps out most air, which also helps to maintain freshness. Thermal carafes typically keep the contents hot for 4-6 hours, sometimes longer. And if you don’t mind cool coffee, your coffee will still taste fresh the next day.
A glass carafe coffee maker with a heated burner, on the other hand, can keep your coffee hot indefinitely if you keep the burner on. But this is at the expense of flavour. Even after just 1 hour I start to notice a burnt flavour, and after any more than 2 hours the coffee tastes pretty stale to me. That’s usually when I pick up the carafe and dump its contents down the sink. To avoid waste I started making smaller amounts of coffee more frequently, but that became a pain in the neck. I thought a better solution would be a coffee maker with a stainless steel (thermal) carafe, and I was right.
As with any product, there are some small annoyances with thermal coffee makers. For example, you can’t just put the coffee and water into the machine and have your coffee ready to drink immediately. You first have to load the water and preheat it before you can make your coffee, since there is no burner to heat your coffee. This is not a big problem, but if you are someone who is always in a hurry in the morning, then this could be an issue for you. But nevertheless, thermal carafe coffee makers are great for having great-tasting coffee within reach for hours at a time.
